Since 2014, Mark Zuckerberg has assembled about 1,400 acres on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a property known as Koolau Ranch. Land purchases have been reported at about $170 million, with at least $100 million more in construction.
Plans described in reporting include two main houses totaling about 57,000 square feet, eleven treehouses and, connected by tunnel, a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter with its own food and energy supply. Zuckerberg has described the shelter as little more than a basement.
At a reported $270 million, the compound equals about 3,087 years of a typical American household’s income.
