In 2021 Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, paid $57.3 million for a concrete beach house in Malibu designed by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, one of the few Ando homes in America.
He then had it stripped. By the time it went back on the market there was no electricity, no plumbing, no windows and no interior finishes. It sold for about $21 million, a loss of roughly $36 million, and the next owner began an $8.5 million restoration.
$57.3 million could pay a full year of rent for 3,211 homeless veterans. The $36 million that simply disappeared could have fed about 329,000 hungry kids for a year.
Purchase price $57.3 million; resale about $21 million, a loss of about $36 million. A former contractor's lawsuit over the work was later reported.
